Trip Management
Below is a list of what crews should know and do in preparation for a safe and enjoyable trip for all aboard.
A. 2 days before the trip:
Contact organization to confirm trip details as outlined on trip schedule (time, location, parking/drop off, number of guests, picnic, wheelchairs, fishing, etc.) A reminder to complete the waivers for each guest.
Agree to confirm trip the morning of, based on latest weather update.
B. Day of the trip:
AM trip confirmation based on latest weather forecast and recommendations (clothing, refreshment, sun protection), reminder to bring the waivers.
Location details confirmation & logistics (Gate code, parking, etc.)
Prepare boat (gas, chairs, fishing & safety equipment)
Clean path for guests and wheelchairs
Install the boarding ramp
Start and warm-up engine
Greeting, paperwork, bathrooms, PFD to each participant
Assist boarding loading/unloading and weight distribution
C. What you should have with you:
Boating licence and driver licence
Mobile phone (emergency contact list, gate codes)
Something to drink and snack
Weather protection (jacket, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen)
PFD
D. Watercraft Operation
Pre-launch checklist (fuel, communication, safety equipment, flotation devices, equipment)
Basic controls: starting, kill switch, steering, throttle, braking
Navigation rules (“rules of the road” on water) Right of way, buoy system, no-wake zones
Docking and mooring refresher
E. Water Safety Essentials
Life jacket types, sizes & inspection
Safe practices (no standing, balanced movement)
Common hazards: cold water shock, currents, entanglement
Group travel safety: communication, buddy system
Sun, hydration, and fatigue risks
F. Emergency Procedures
Person overboard: spot, alert, throw a rescue ring
Engine failure response
Activating Emergency Services (911)
CPR & first aid
G. Environmental & Legal Considerations
Awareness of local regulations (speed limits, protected areas)
Marine wildlife protection
Weather readiness: reading forecasts, wave conditions
Invasive species prevention (boat cleaning, draining)
